Our Top Release of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

At first glance, this album may look closer to a difficult scholarly quiz rather than a new pop project from a musician who just had a last single featured a global K-pop star. Divided across four separate movements and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album investigating feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards here, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend dry academic posturing is nothing short of miraculous, and complete praise going to Rosalía. While it's not her first project to blend the past with modern styles, its scale feel far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more pronounced. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart in two, you nevertheless want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes in like cartoonish impact. The track then segues to the wild single driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album lies in you never exactly understand—or even wish to predict—what you will go to next."

Nearly every track ends at a completely distinct place than how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital cacophony. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts off dark and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album involves navigating the line of radical experimentation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that the album has achieved her first release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick is echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires patience to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where other big releases of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
